Tsunami Recovery

A example of a tsunami's unimaginable size and power to destroy whole towns and leave cars on rooftops in its wake.

May, 2011

Three months after the March 11, 2011 tsunami that struck the Northwest coast of Japan and crippled the Fukushima nuclear power plant, salvage and recovery operations continued. Many locations, such as Onagawa, a small port, were hit hard, were still without power and clean up was still focused strictly on restoring major infrastructure. Many side of the roads and the remains of houses had yet to be cleared. In some spots, the roads were indistinguishable from the general field of debris. In surreal scenes, whole houses lay on their sides and boats were hanging on utility poles.
