Underwater projects can require extensive logistics just to mobilize the equipment to the operations site. As an extreme example, a one hour underwater operation to validate ROV depth compliance with specifications required a 200 mile, 9 hour sail from Mumbai, India on the Indian Navy Guided Missile Destroyer, INS Vabhuti with an operating crew of about 60. That is an expensive undertaking that requires a significant amount planning, coordination and expense for a simple, short duration project.
While most operations are typically not that arduous and expensive, all underwater projects require some level of planning and logistics management. From the experience I have gained on the projects presented here, the most important are:
- an understanding of the project's requirements and objectives,
- selecting the proper equipment and clothing,
- planning the travel, equipment transport and accommodations if necessary,
- using an equipment checklist,
- including adequate backup parts and spares,
- on-site coordination with all participants,
- not forgetting to hit the record button!
